JALON
In 1472 the Moors living in Jalón sent a selection of wines to the Valencian Court and negotiated with traders in Jávea the sale of a product which in time would become the base of Marina Alta's economy: raisins produced in the traditional 'riu-raus'. Jalón's wines belong to the 'denominación de origen' of Alicante and raisins are still produced in small quantities. Today Jalón is the capital of the Pop valley and is a lively city with craft shops, wine cellars, restaurants and other establishments offering a range of services to tourists. Each Saturday a large flea market is held in the area of the Azud that specializes in antique furniture. Jalon is situated in the Vall del Pop, in the southern part of the interior of the Marina Alta. Its area extends between Serra de la Solana and Serra de Bernia, and forms the border with the Marina Baixa. Although the village is located in the middle of the valley, the largest part of the municipality lies between mountains, of which the highest is Serra de Bernia. Other mountains are La Solana -with its Muslim Cas tell d'Aixa - the Serra del Ferrer and the Penyo de la Mica. Near the old town we find El Tossalet, and from this vantage point we can enjoy the magnificent view of the local surroundings. The climate is mediterranean with an average rainfall of 789 mm. per year and agriculture is mostly based on the cultivation of grapes and almonds. On the mountain slopes we can see 'carrasco' pine trees, holm oaks and aromatic plants like rosemary and thyme.
